In many traditional cultures around the world, women are surrounded by their mother, sisters, friends, in laws...and those people support and assist her during her pregnancy, birth and postpartum. She is surrounded by generations of women who are caring for her and helping her with her new baby. In our culture, we often lack this village mentality and guidance. Whether it be because we have barriers of geography or because our culture expects mamas to be able to do it all on their own, many moms go through their pregnancy, birth and postpartum without the "village of women" surrounding them. Having a child is minimized in our culture and women are often not fully prepared for the profound transition that occurs during pregnancy, birth and once baby is here. Home based support and encouragement for all families during this extraordinary time is so important! For many women, the image of the nurturing postpartum or antepartum doula is an exotic one, long erased from our cultural consciousness.
As a doula, I provide that nurturing support and education. I truly believe that every woman and family should have support, education and help during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. I put a great deal of emphasis on mothering the mother as well as the new family and helping them in this amazing transition in their life! Whether this is your first baby or your sixth baby, a doula is beneficial to getting your family off to the best possible start!
I believe every woman deserves a doula and if you are facing economic hardship, are a single parent, your partner is deployed or are a teen parent (etc), I am happy to work with you financially or through bartering services/items so that you may have a doula.
